Some items in our homes stay packed most of the year and only come out for special holidays. Get your home holiday-ready with smart packing and storage tips to keep décor organized, protected, and easy to find when the season arrives.

It’s that time of year again, holiday after holiday!

Thanksgiving blends right into Halloween, then Christmas, New Year’s, and plenty of other celebrations in between. Each one comes with its own sparkle, lights, and decorations, indoors and outdoors.

But as fun as it is to pull out boxes of décor, hang the garlands, and set up festive lights, as well buy new décor, it can quickly get messy and overwhelming.

Here’s how to pack, store, and refresh your holiday decorations so every season starts organized and stress-free.

How to Store and Label Holiday Décor

How to store your holiday décor

Separate and Label Your Décor by Holiday

The best way to store decorations is to designate a separate container for each holiday. Keep Halloween in one, Thanksgiving in another, Christmas in its own, and so on. Our clients at Vancouver In The Box, already know this well, when we pack storage areas for a move, we group similar items together so it’s easy to unpack exactly what’s needed for each holiday.

Label each box clearly on two sides, but not on top, so you can easily find what you need when the next holiday rolls around. This prevents mixing items and saves you time when decorating.

Pro Tip: Use clear bins or color-coded containers, orange for Halloween, red and green for Christmas, etc. It makes finding things a breeze!

Declutter Before You Pack Your Holiday Décor

As you open each box, take a few minutes to sort and declutter. Go through every item carefully:

  • Check if it still works.
  • If something is broken, ask yourself: Will I fix it? When? How?
  • If you won’t repair or reuse it, set it aside for donation, resale, or recycling.
  • If you plan to fix it, set it a side, label with a green tape what needs to be fixes and set time to get it done. Don’t put it back in the box unidentified. If it wasn’t fixed this time, ask your self the question again at the end of the holiday before packing it all back.

The holidays are a perfect time to lighten your load, you’ll have less to pack and store, and more room for what truly brings you joy.

Did you know?

In Metro Vancouver, the most-sold items on local marketplaces in December are clothing and Christmas decorations! So, if you’re not using certain pieces, consider selling or donating them, someone else will love them.

Rehome or Donate Unused Décor

If you open your holiday boxes a few weeks before ethe holiday, when others are looking to but items, you will have a chance to donate new or gently used holiday items that just don’t fit your style anymore. A friend, neighbor, or family member might appreciate them, and it’s a great way to give back during the season of generosity. By the end of the holidays, make sure these “re-gifts” are gone, leaving you with fewer things to store and more joy shared.

After the Holidays Pack Thoughtfully

When the celebrations are over and it’s time to pack everything away:

  • Go through another quick check for broken or unwanted items.
  • Remove all batteries from lights or décor to avoid corrosion.
  • Clean and dry everything, especially outdoor decorations that may have collected moisture. Storing them damp can cause mold or damage by next year.
  • Wrap fragile items individually and store them upright if possible.
  • Label each container clearly before putting it away.

Only store what you truly love and plan to use again next year. Remember these broken items you promised to fix? Did you fix? Are you going to fix it? Its time to revisit this decision.
